Apple will bring Apple Intelligence to China starting with an iOS 27.3 beta set to launch on November 4, the company said on its Chinese newsroom website, as first reported by MacRumors. A full iOS 27.3 release is scheduled for December. The rollout ends a wait that began when Apple first unveiled Apple Intelligence, its suite of on-device and cloud AI features, in 2024 for other markets.

The China launch does not include Apple’s newest Siri, the voice assistant Apple has been rebuilding with generative AI. Instead, iOS 27.3 brings a set of earlier Apple Intelligence tools: summaries of stacked notifications, real-time translation, writing tools that rewrite and proofread text, visual intelligence, which lets a phone camera identify and look up objects, and a feature that removes unwanted objects from photos. These are the same features Apple shipped to other regions in its first wave of Apple Intelligence updates.

Apple also said it worked with Alibaba to add support for the Chinese company’s Qwen chatbot within some of these experiences. Apple has described the arrangement as similar to the ChatGPT integration it built with OpenAI for iOS outside China starting in 2024, where a third-party chatbot handles certain requests Apple’s own models don’t cover. Apple has not said which specific features will call on Qwen.

A slow path to approval

Getting Apple Intelligence into China required clearing the country’s regulatory process for generative AI services, which Apple passed in July. That approval signaled the launch was close. The following month, Reuters reported that Apple had trained a separate large language model specifically for the Chinese market, a step beyond simply translating its existing models, reflecting both data rules and content requirements particular to China.

China is Apple’s third-largest market and one where it has faced growing competition from domestic phone makers that have moved faster to add AI features to their own devices. The absence of Apple Intelligence in China had left iPhone owners there without tools already available to users elsewhere, even as rivals advertised their own AI assistants built with local partners.

What happens next will show how far Apple is willing to go in China versus other markets. The beta arriving November 4 will reveal exactly how the Qwen integration behaves in practice, and whether Apple limits it to specific tasks the way it treats ChatGPT elsewhere. It’s also unclear when, or whether, the more capable Siri overhaul Apple has promised internationally will get its own approval and release in China, or what role Qwen or any other partner might play when it does.
