Google is testing a new Gemini feature called Call for Me that lets its AI assistant phone businesses on a user’s behalf, handling tasks like making reservations or checking whether an item is in stock. The feature starts rolling out to Pixel 11 owners in the U.S. who pay for a Gemini subscription, according to TechCrunch. It also requires the beta version of Google’s Phone app for Android, reflecting the company’s plan to treat this as an early-stage test rather than a full release.

With Call for Me, Gemini can call a business, introduce itself, navigate an automated phone menu, wait on hold, and then carry the conversation once a person picks up. Google says the assistant can handle tasks such as asking a store if a product is in stock, booking a restaurant table, moving an existing appointment to a new date, or placing an item on hold.

The update marks a shift from Google’s earlier AI calling tools. Gemini will now be able to share personal information that a user approves beforehand, which the company says lets it complete a wider range of tasks than before. Calls go out from the user’s own phone number, dialed directly from their device, and a live transcript lets the user follow along and step in to take over the call at any point.

Call for Me builds on years of Google experiments with automated, AI-guided calling. At its I/O developer conference, the company once demonstrated its Google Assistant calling a hair salon to book an appointment, adding conversational filler such as pauses and hesitation sounds to make it seem more natural. Last year, Google introduced Ask for Me, which let Gemini call businesses to ask about pricing or services. Pixel owners have also had access to Hold for Me and Talk to a Live Rep, which wait on hold through phone trees until a person answers, and Direct My Call, which shows the numbers to press to get through an automated system.

Google says it is starting Call for Me as a small-scale experiment because real-world phone conversations are nuanced, and the company wants time to refine the feature before expanding access. The company has not said when Call for Me might reach other Pixel models, other Android phones, or Gemini subscribers outside the U.S.

The launch places Gemini alongside other AI agents built to make phone calls on a user’s behalf, including Meta’s Muse and Instinct. What remains unclear is how the feature performs against businesses whose phone systems aren’t built to handle an AI caller, and whether Google will expand eligibility beyond the current beta test group.
